Madhubani or Mithila paintings are the most popular art works of Bihar. They originated over 2500 years ago and still carry the same motifs and styles from then. 
The style of painting, the choice of motifs, colours and usage were categorized according to the caste of the painter. The modern Madhubani/Mithila artist is free to choose the design, colours, motifs and styles and mixes them around to give their own rendition to the oldest known art style still practiced today.
